A car advertised with an affordable installment may leave a large amount due at the end. That final lump sum is often called a balloon payment. Understand how it fits into the agreement before deciding whether the monthly figure works for you.
Follow every payment, not just the installment
Start with the cash price, down payment, financed amount, number of installments and final payment. Then record additional costs and whether they are already included. SAMA’s consumer-finance disclosures cover key information such as the amount financed, installments and total payable. Obtain the documents for your specific product; do not assume all lease or ownership-transfer arrangements operate identically.
A fictional offer with a balloon
| Component | Amount |
|---|---|
| Upfront payment | SAR 10,000 |
| 60 monthly installments of SAR 1,200 | SAR 72,000 |
| Final payment | SAR 25,000 |
| Total of these payments | SAR 107,000 |
This illustration excludes any separate costs and is not an offer from a provider. If you want to build the SAR 25,000 final payment over 60 months without assuming investment returns, you need to set aside about SAR 416.67 monthly. Your installment plus balloon saving is therefore about SAR 1,616.67, before insurance and running costs.
Why refinancing is not a complete plan
You might intend to refinance the balloon or sell the car, but future financing approval and resale value are uncertain. Test what happens if the vehicle sells for less than the amount due or if your income changes. Ask the provider about the actual end-of-contract options and document the conditions.
Do not assume that returning the vehicle automatically cancels every amount owed. The agreement’s condition, mileage, damage and settlement provisions may matter. Review those clauses before you treat a return option as equivalent to ownership.
Add costs that affect the household budget
List insurance, fuel, maintenance, parking and other expected outgoings separately. Where a quoted payment already includes an item, avoid adding it again. Compare similar cars and the same period of use so the worksheet does not favor a cheaper-looking but less suitable option.
Our car finance calculator is useful for its stated payment assumptions; it does not model every balloon or lease structure. Use the provider’s schedule for the actual offer and the savings-goal calculator to plan the final amount. Read the car finance guide for broader product considerations.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the lowest installment mean the cheapest car finance? No. Compare all payments and any costs outside them.
Should I invest the balloon savings? Consider the fixed payment date and the risk of losing value or access when the money is needed.
