Leaving Saudi Arabia: Your Financial Exit Checklist

A visual checklist for closing out your finances before a final exit from Saudi Arabia — gratuity, GOSI, bank accounts, and what to do in what order.

SaudiMoney · 2026-09-16

We wrote about the first 90 days of setting up your finances as a new resident. This is the other end of that timeline — what to actually close out, in order, before a final exit.

Your employer's HR/legal process for the final exit visa itself is a separate, non-financial track — this checklist covers only the money side, which is easy to leave until the last week and then rush.

The exit sequence

1

Confirm your final settlement figure

Your end-of-service gratuity is calculated on your final wage and years of service — see our gratuity calculator to estimate it, then confirm the actual figure with your employer's HR/payroll team well before your last working day, not after.

2

Check your GOSI status

If you're a Saudi national, your pension contribution record stays part of your ongoing national record. If you're a non-Saudi employee, you likely never built a GOSI pension in the first place — see our GOSI guide for what this means either way.

3

Settle any outstanding credit obligations

Any open financing, credit card balance, or BNPL installments should be fully settled before you leave — an unresolved obligation doesn't just disappear when you exit the country, and can create real problems if you ever plan to return.

4

Decide what happens to your bank account

Some banks allow residents to maintain certain account types after leaving; others require closure. Confirm directly with your bank rather than assuming either way, and settle this before your Iqama is cancelled, not after.

5

Move your remaining funds

Once everything above is settled, transfer your remaining balance home through a licensed channel — see our remittance guide for how to compare providers and avoid losing money to a poor exchange rate on what's likely a larger-than-usual final transfer.

Why the order matters

Doing this out of sequence creates real friction:

  • Settling credit obligations before you know your final gratuity figure can mean paying from the wrong pool of money, when the gratuity itself might have covered it.
  • Deciding on your bank account after your Iqama is cancelled can be too late — some account actions require an active residency status to process.
  • Moving money home in a rush on your final week, rather than planning the transfer, is exactly how people end up accepting a bad exchange rate on their largest transfer of the year.

What doesn't require action

  • Your SIMAH file isn't something you "close" — it simply stops accumulating new Saudi activity. It's not relevant to future credit applications outside Saudi Arabia, which run on entirely separate credit bureaus.
  • Zakat and investment holdings, if you have any through a Saudi platform, follow that platform's own account-closure or transfer-out process — contact them directly well before your exit date, since liquidating investments can take longer than a simple bank transfer.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long before I leave should I start this checklist? Start confirming your gratuity figure and bank account situation at least a month out — both can involve back-and-forth with HR or your bank that doesn't resolve in a single conversation.

Does leaving Saudi Arabia affect my credit history if I return later? Your SIMAH file reflects your history up to your departure; if you return and resume financial activity, that historical record is generally still there, though how relevant older history is to a fresh application is something to confirm with SIMAH or a lender directly.

What happens if I still owe money on a loan or credit card when I leave? This should be settled before departure — leaving with an unresolved balance is a serious issue, not something that's simply left behind, and can affect your ability to return or obtain financial products in Saudi Arabia in the future.

Can I keep a Saudi bank account open after I leave permanently? This depends on the specific bank and account type — some allow it under certain conditions, others require closure once your residency ends. Confirm directly with your bank rather than assuming.

Summary

Confirm your final settlement figure, check your GOSI status, clear any outstanding credit, decide on your bank account, then move your remaining money home through a licensed channel — in that order. Most of the friction people hit when leaving Saudi Arabia comes from doing these out of sequence or leaving them to the final week.
